Duluth Orthodontist Dr. Chris Carlson is one of those people who goes out of his way to make people happy. He says that making others happy is the key to a fulfilled life. That’s why he ultimately chose to be an orthodontist. Every day is about making people smile - and also allows him to combine what he loves: problem-solving, engineering, technology and working with people.
Dr. Carlson earned a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, working as an environmental engineer in Chicago for four years before committing to an additional six years of advanced education to become an orthodontist. He says working as an engineer was not as satisfying as he’d hoped it would be because he was working with numbers more than people. Orthodontics allows him to combine the principles of engineering with dentistry and now, just like the smiles he creates, it’s a perfect fit. He began his orthodontic practice in 2003. Dr. Carlson is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. This board certification is awarded after a rigorous process including examination of both knowledge and completed orthodontic cases. It's just another way that Dr. Carlson has put extra effort into providing you the highest level of care.
Dr. Carlson is a native of Ironwood, Michigan. He met his wife Amy while on the ski team in college. They were married in 1995 and have two children, Lauren and Erik. They chose to build their life and business in Duluth because of the quality of life in the area: endless outdoor opportunities, great people and Lake Superior. When he‘s not working, Dr. Carlson enjoys both alpine and nordic skiing, mountain biking (you’ll see him skiing in the Birkie and riding in the Chequamegon each year), traveling to new places, helping with kids’ activities, flying small planes (he‘s had his pilot’s license since the age of 16), and bird hunting with the family’s yellow lab, Lucie.
Welcoming Dr. Hammer, our new associate!
Dr. Christine Hammer always knew that she wanted to pursue a career in healthcare because it would give her the opportunity to help others every day. Orthodontics is a perfect fit for Dr. Hammer because she is able to integrate an interest in science and healthcare with the joy that comes from helping others by creating beautiful smiles.
Dr. Hammer grew up in Duluth, attending Holy Rosary School and Marshall. Dr. Hammer went on to earn a B.S. in Biochemistry summa cum laude from the University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She then completed her D.D.S. degree at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, and ultimately earned a Master’s degree upon graduation from the orthodontic residency at the University of Minnesota. After living in the Twin Cities for ten years, Dr. Hammer couldn’t wait to get back home to Duluth. She joined the Carlson Orthodontics team in June 2015, and is proud to be providing world-class orthodontic care in her hometown communities.
Dr. Hammer met her husband, Dr. Kyle Hammer, while in dental school. Both have a passion for community service, and coordinated the volunteer dental clinic at St. Paul’s Union Gospel Mission during their time in dental school. Dr. Kyle Hammer has been practicing dentistry in Duluth since 2013 with Dr. Stephen L’Abbe, Dr. Christine Hammer’s father. Christine and Kyle feel very fortunate to be able to build their lives in the Duluth area.
In her free time, Dr. Hammer likes to play with her new goldendoodle puppy, Murphy, who loves to swim in Lake Superior! She also enjoys long distance running (you’ll see her running Grandma’s most years and she completed the Boston Marathon in 2009), alpine skiing, summer weekends at her family’s cabin near Superior, and taking in all of the great outdoor activities that northern Minnesota has to offer.
